Compassion, generosity and mercy keeping us on the road to salvation

En Español

Obispo James A. Tamayo

This anniversary issue in particular focuses on the first two commandments, I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me and you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. While we celebrate the anniversary of our diocesan magazine, we also pause to remember an individual who has left an indelible mark on our community. Although private in her personal life, Lamar Bruni Vergara’s kindness, compassion and generosity remain imprinted in the very fabric of our society. She began her philanthropy as an individual and her legacy continues today through the benevolent acts of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust. Even though most Laredoans remain unfamiliar with her persona as well as that of her Trust, one simply needs to look at the more than 70 religious, educational and health institutions and organizations infused with the care and compassion of Lamar Bruni

Vergara. Then one pauses and ponders all the good deeds touching the many lives of those utilizing and benefiting from new community centers, educational facilities and health endeavors throughout Laredo and Webb County. I realize that not all of us can bequeath estates for the benefit of our citizens. However, in Lamar Bruni Vergara’s spirit of humanitarianism, you can make a positive difference by contributing your time, talent and treasure in your parish and by participating in diocesan and community efforts to improve the quality of life for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Jesus did this every day of his life. Now with the conclusion of Holy Week and Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus serves as a reminder that following in His footsteps ensures the triumph of good over evil. The Resurrection reminds us that our selfless efforts of compassion, generosity and mercy play an integral role in keeping us on the road to salvation. Let us love God with all our heart, with all our strength and with all our mind. Let us respond generously to the needs of our brothers and sisters. ¡Todo con amor!
